Lake Natron is the single most important breeding site for the Lesser Flamingo, supporting roughly 75% of the world's population. These birds have evolved specialized skin and salt-filtering glands to survive the lake's caustic, high-pH waters, which serve as a natural barrier against predators. The lake's abundance of Spirulina algae not only sustains the massive flocks but also gives the flamingos their iconic pink plumage.
