A compact Rift Valley park between Tarangire and Ngorongoro — groundwater forest, hippo-filled lake shores, birds, and a scenic stop on the way to Serengeti.
Lake Manyara National Park sits beneath the Great Rift Valley escarpment. It is smaller than Serengeti or Tarangire, which makes it ideal for a half-day or overnight stop toward Ngorongoro and the Serengeti.
Expect groundwater forest, floodplains, and lake shore life — hippos, monkeys, elephants, and excellent birding. Tree-climbing lions are part of Manyara folklore; sightings are possible but not guaranteed.
Manyara rarely replaces Serengeti nights. It adds habitat contrast and breaks the journey so you do not arrive in Serengeti exhausted from pure transfer days.

Manyara is a rewarding year-round short stop. Birding and lake levels vary with rains; dry months can concentrate animals near water.
If nights are scarce, prioritize Serengeti and Ngorongoro, then add Manyara only if the route timing is natural.
