in the Serengeti
Game drives, balloon safaris, migration viewing, walking options, photography, and how to build days that match the zone you are staying in.
A Serengeti safari is not one activity — it is a daily rhythm of game drives, timed for dawn and dusk, shaped by which zone you sleep in and what the animals are doing that month.
Beyond classic drives, many guests add a hot-air balloon flight, focus days on Great Migration movements, or arrange walking safaris in permitted buffer areas near Ndutu / NCA. Photography-led private vehicles are also popular.
The best itineraries pick two or three experiences and give them time. Trying to do everything in 48 hours usually means more driving and fewer memorable sightings.
A typical safari day starts before sunrise, since predators are most active in the first cool hours of light and traffic on the park roads is at its lowest. Most camps offer a light breakfast or coffee before departure, with a full breakfast served in the bush or back at camp once the morning drive ends.
How much you fit into a Serengeti stay also depends heavily on which zone you are based in. Central Serengeti's dense road network supports flexible, activity-packed days, while the Northern Serengeti's river-focused game drives reward slower, more patient days built around a single stakeout location.
Rule of thumb: Match activities to your zone — balloon + predators in Central; river stakeouts in the North; calving plains in Ndutu.
Dawn & dusk game drives
The non-negotiable core. Predators move, light is beautiful, and temperatures are kinder than midday.
Hot-air balloon safari
Sunrise over the plains, then a bush breakfast. Best booked early for peak months.
Migration viewing days
In season, dedicate full days to herds, crossings, or calving plains rather than rushing park loops.
Private photographic vehicle
Fewer guests, more control of angles and time at sightings — ideal for serious photographers.
Jul–Oct: prioritize Northern Serengeti river days and balloon flights if staying central between connections.
Dec–Mar: prioritize Ndutu calving plains and predator action; walking options may be available near NCA camps.
Any month in Central: classic predator game drives remain excellent.
