Lake Natron
Safari Guide

A remote alkaline Rift Valley lake near Ol Doinyo Lengai — flamingos, Maasai culture, waterfall hikes, and a wild scenic add-on beyond the classic Serengeti–Ngorongoro route.

Northern Circuit extension

Lake Natron sits on the floor of the Gregory Rift near the Kenya border — a shallow, highly alkaline soda lake painted pink and red by salt-loving algae. It is not a conventional Big Five park; it is scenery, birds, culture, and geology.

Most travellers come for vast flamingo flocks, the Ngare Sero waterfall hike with local Maasai guides, and views of Ol Doinyo Lengai, the sacred active volcano of the Maasai. Heat, dust, and rough roads are part of the experience.

Natron works best as a one- or two-night add-on for adventurous travellers, photographers, and birders — not as a substitute for Serengeti or Ngorongoro wildlife nights.

💡

How to use it: Add Natron after Manyara or Ngorongoro, or between Serengeti and Arusha when you want a remote Rift Valley night.

Best time

The dry season (roughly late May to early November) is more comfortable for heat and road access. Flamingo numbers often build from August through October, though flocks move with lake chemistry and food.

Avoid relying on April–May long rains for road access. Natron is hot year-round at low altitude — plan early starts and shade.

When Natron is most rewarding
  • →Best as 1–2 nights, not a half-day rush.
  • →Bring sun protection, water shoes for the waterfall hike, and patience for rough tracks.
  • →Do not trade core Serengeti nights for Natron unless scenery and birds are your priority.
