The Western Corridor is a narrower arm of Serengeti National Park following the Grumeti River through woodland and riverine habitats. From roughly May to July, migrating herds funnel west and face crocodile-guarded crossings — a prelude to the more famous Mara events.
Beyond migration weeks, the corridor remains rewarding for elephant, buffalo, topi, and classic woodland birding. It suits travellers who want migration energy with fewer peak-season northern crowds, or who visit in the early dry season.
Access is typically by light aircraft to Grumeti-area strips or via longer road routing from central Serengeti. Itineraries often combine Western nights with Seronera for a complete predator-plus-migration mix.
The Grumeti River itself holds some of the largest Nile crocodiles recorded anywhere in the ecosystem, some estimated at over 5.5 metres and several decades old — individuals that have ambushed migrating herds at the same crossing points for generations. Because vehicle numbers here remain far lower than the Mara later in the season, watching these giants in near-total quiet is one of the corridor's most underrated experiences.
Tsetse flies are more prevalent in this woodland habitat than in the open plains further east, so most guides recommend neutral-coloured, long-sleeved clothing rather than bright colours or dark blue and black, which tsetse flies are known to be drawn to.
Best for: Early migration crossings, elephant lovers, and travellers seeking a less crowded alternative to August north.
